Pennsylvania Hospital (1755)

Pennsylvania Hospital, founded by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin, was the first hospital in the country. In the background are contemporary buildings of the hospital, now operated by the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Located on the western edge of Society Hill, Pennsylvania Hospital, founded by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin, was the first hospital in the country. The hospital also offered the first institutional care for the mentally ill in two basement cells. In the background of this photograph 2014 are contemporary buildings of the hospital, now operated by the University of Pennsylvania Health System as an acute-care facility.
