The Executive Consolidation Committee was chaired by the publisher of the genteel Whig journal The North American and United States Gazette, Morton McMichael (1807-79), shown here, and included civic luminaries like Binney’s son, Horace Jr., the industrialist Samuel Vaughan Merrick (1801-70), and one of Philadelphia’s richest men, the druggist George W. Carpenter (1802-60).
