Agnes Repplier, an essayist and biographer, served as the first female president of the Contemporary Club. In addition to her work with the Contemporary Club, she was a member of the Acorn Club and a founding member of the Cosmopolitan Club, a social club for women. (Library of Congress)

Agnes Repplier, an essayist and biographer, served as the first female president of the Contemporary Club. Repplier was born in Philadelphia in 1858 and began publishing essays at age twenty to financially support her struggling family. Her short essays were regularly published in The Atlantic Monthly and other publications. In addition to her work with the Contemporary Club, she was a member of the Acorn Club and a founding member of the Cosmopolitan Club, a social club for women.
