The Philadelphia Police Athletic League has its roots in baseball. The first chapter formed in 1947 under the supervision of Philadelphia Police Department sergeant August “Gus” Rangnow. Rangnow oversaw the first sport offered by PAL, the sandlot baseball program. PAL participants in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania, are pictured here with their officer-mentor.
