On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first intraoffice phone call to his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, reportedly the words “Mr. Watson, come here! I want to see you!” Watson, shown in this 1902 photograph, later explained that Bell had spilled battery acid while working in his lab and needed assistance in cleaning it. (Library of Congress )
